About Howard Harawitz

Photos of SF Bay Area politics in the 60s

During the years of political ferment in the 1960s I was an active photographer in Berkeley, California. I'm in the process of posting photos related to civil rights activity, Vietnam war protests, and the Free Speech Movement.

Photography - Oakland, California, in the sixties

In September, 2005, the networks were full of images of the devastation of the American south by two hurricanes. The pictures I saw on television reminded me of photographs that I had made in the nineteen-sixties when I was living in California. It seems that not much has changed since then -- except, perhaps, that now even more people are living in unfit housing.

"... musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul...any musical innovation is full of danger to the whole State, and ought to be prohibited... when modes of music change, the fundamental laws of the State always change with them."      Plato, The Republic
